About Brahma with Attendants and Musicians

The artist and artwork

The maker of Brahma with Attendants and Musicians is not known. Created in Korea in the late sixteenth century, the work is a hanging scroll painted in ink and color on hemp. A towering Brahma, Beomcheon in Korean, stands at its center. Originally a Hindu deity, Brahma entered the Buddhist pantheon and, together with Indra, became a protector of Buddhist teachings. The anonymous painter does not isolate the deity; attendants, musicians, ceremonial fans, and jeweled canopies turn the scene into an immense heavenly assembly.

The world around it

The scroll was made during the Joseon dynasty, established in 1392 with a state philosophy centered on Neo-Confucianism. Buddhism, which had received state support for more than a thousand years, was officially rejected, yet private worship and Buddhist art continued. The Met notes that nonroyal patrons commissioned Buddhist paintings on hemp, while elite patrons favored silk. The material therefore belongs to a devotional world that survived outside official preference, although the record does not identify this work's patron. Official suppression also helps explain why early Joseon Buddhist paintings are now rare.

A detail to notice

The painted image itself measures eighty-five by eighty-seven inches, and its mounting rises eleven feet high. Within that scale, the musicians form an unusually precise catalog of sound: a mouth organ, long transverse flute, two-stringed violin, four-stringed lute with a crooked neck, wood clappers, and a triangular clay wind instrument. Fans and bejeweled canopies float above them. The crowded performance visualizes Brahma's heaven as a place of pleasure and entertainment. When Mrs. Edward S. Harkness gave the scroll to The Met in 1921, it was still identified only tentatively as Chinese or Korean; later study secured its place in Korean art.
