About Otto, Count of Nassau and his Wife Adelheid van Vianen

The artist and artwork

Bernard van Orley made Otto, Count of Nassau and his Wife Adelheid van Vianen around 1530–35 as a tapestry design, not an independent history painting. Pen and brown ink define the scene; watercolor over black chalk colors the horses, clothing, heraldry, and landscape. A tracing of the foreground figures survives on the reverse. Brussels's leading tapestry designer, Van Orley joined close Northern detail to the lifesize figures and deep perspective of Italian Renaissance design. This presentation sheet probably let the patron approve the composition before a full-scale cartoon guided the weavers.

The world around it

Henry III of Nassau, an advisor to Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, commissioned eight designs near the end of the 1520s to glorify his Orange-Nassau ancestors. Brussels was Europe's principal center for ambitious court tapestries, and Willem de Moyen wove Van Orley's series. Its imagined fourteenth-century family history addressed a sixteenth-century political world: lineage asserted rank, loyalty, and proximity to imperial rule. The finished hangings were probably destroyed by fire in 1760; this sheet and six related drawings are the principal surviving record of the cycle.

A detail to notice

Otto and Adelheid meet on horseback as the landscape opens beneath them. Otto's gray charger turns in profile and lifts its front legs, while Adelheid's horse is shown boldly from behind, creating depth without hiding her blue skirt. Their garments form large colored shapes, yet bridles, armor, sleeves, and feathers remain minutely described. A road bends toward a walled settlement and blue-green horizon. Above, two coats of arms, paired festoons, and a name-bearing cartouche turn the encounter into dynastic theater; the tapestry would have added another border. The drawing was almost unknown until shortly before The Met acquired it in 1995, so a rediscovered paper design now preserves a lost monumental textile.
