About The Trees, Early Afternoon, France
The artist and artwork
William A. Harper painted The Trees, Early Afternoon, France around 1905 as an oil-on-canvas landscape. Born in Canada and educated at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Harper continued his training in Paris at the Académie Julian and sought instruction from the expatriate painter Henry Ossawa Tanner. In this French countryside scene, a broad canopy and branching trunks structure the view while smaller forms and a distant figure draw the eye into open land beyond.
The world around it
Paris at the beginning of the twentieth century was an international training ground where Barbizon naturalism, Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism remained active points of departure. For a Black North American artist, study abroad also offered professional opportunities alongside a different set of social conditions from the entrenched racism and segregation of the United States. Harper’s landscape belongs to that transatlantic art world: rooted in academic study but open to the more immediate, experimental handling he encountered in France.
A detail to notice
The Met points to Harper’s painterly brushstrokes and the dark outlines around the tree branches as sources of the scene’s on-the-spot immediacy. Look at how those branches divide the pale sky: the dark network is both observed tree structure and an almost abstract design. The title specifies early afternoon, but Harper creates the hour less through a clocklike cue than through the balance of shade beneath the canopy and light opening beyond it.
